My Son The Destroyer

It is inevitable with children that things with break and get broken quite often but for some reason it happens a lot more than not with Noah. I think half the problem is that he is just really curious and he wants things his way, so if they aren't his way then he will change it.

For example, at Christmas my Dad gave him a Cars transporter full of cars. All of the cars had spoilers on the back but now half of them don't, because he pulled them off. Being 2 he hasn't pulled them off on purpose while thinking I'm going to ruin these cars, I honestly believe it is because he was curious to what they were. And once had one come off when he pulled it, he tried a few more, until I figured out what he was doing and told him to stop.

Another example is with their Scalextric that my husband got for them. The boys were up in Finley's room the other day putting it together to play with it, when Noah came down the stairs with the silver things from the bottom of the cars in his hands. In his exact words 'I didn't want them on there'. This was all very innocent as in his eyes he honestly thought they weren't supposed to be there and that he was helping us out. But to us this was rather annoying as we had to take the cars apart to put them back together.

Now when things like this happen at home it don't matter so much as it is our stuff. Yes he gets told off for not looking after his things but we don't worry so much is something gets broken. But when things happen outside the house, this is when it gets a little embarrassing and makes us a little bit angry.

This happened today and is what prompted this post. We were around my best friends and her little girl has a toy kitchen which she loves. The kids are always playing with it and most of the time in a well behaved manner. I went to pick Finley up from preschool and my friend kindly offered for Noah to stay there rather than strap him in the pushchair, kicking and screaming, back to the preschool. On my return I was met with Noah saying he had broken the kitchen and then to be told he had pulled off the tap. He had done this by standing on a stool and hanging onto the tap. I don't think the thought of breaking it even came into his head, I really think he was just being silly and curious. But my goodness this curiosity is bloody annoying! I felt terrible and couldn't apologise enough. On returning home I called the store in which the kitchen came from to see if I could get a replacement tap and thankfully I could, so we are off to pick that up at the weekend.

This isn't the first time he has broken one of his friends toys. We were round there a few weeks ago and for some reason he wanted to sit in the toy baby's cot. I told him no numerous times but this fell on deaf ears and before I knew it he was in there and he had snapped the side. Again as I felt today, I felt terrible. I know these things happen but they always happen when my 2 year old is around.

We have a couple of toy vehicles that are Postman Pat's van and Fireman Sam's fire engine. Every time these toys come out Noah will pull the doors off, 'Why?!' I keep asking myself but I honestly don't have an answer.

I am going to start calling his the destroyer as destruction seems to follow when Noah is around. Does anyone else has a toddler that seems to break everything? I would love to know so that I don't feel like I have hulk on my hands!

The destroyer himself!

  1. Hahaha yes my 4 year old Jack is just growing out of it. He is super obsessed with cars and always breaks them and takes them apart. His grandad does old classic cars up and I think he is trying to work on them. Definitely just a curiosity phase thing but never good when they break other kids stuff haha. Xx

  4. Boys will be boys!! My nephews are just the same...albeit now they're a little older, they somehow manage to put things back together afterwards! #PicknMix

  5. So very true. Our eldest and pop up books never got on. I think that also was down to trying to figure out how they worked.

  6. Maybe he is just super loving those toys? :-D It can be awkward when things like this happen. Sorry I don't have a toddler, but things to look forward to! #justanotherlinky

  7. It is awkward when things get broken. Maybe it's just a phase?! Soy no answers to this one.

  8. My little boy is a destroyer too! Especially his big sisters toys! It's not a malicious thing I think he's just terribly clumsy x #justanotherlinky

  9. My youngest does this too, I think she is just curious about how things work. Perhaps they are both going to grow up to be inventors when they are older :-) #justanotherlinky

  13. It must be a boy thing - my brother used to love to destroy things. I remember him and his friend taking a hammer to his toy cars just to see what would happen. #justanotherlinky (Squirmy Popple)

  14. I think it is just little boys (though to be fair my daughter is quite destructive)! #justanotherlinky

  15. I reckon it's just curiosity to see how far he can push it! My daughter does this in a different way by gently touching things she shouldn't! Sure it will pass as with everything!! Thanks for hosting xx

  16. I push my mummy to the limit sometimes! Always sneaking behind her back! Love his cheesy 'devil' grin ;) #CoolMumClub #JustAnotherLinky

  17. My seventeen month old soon is exactly the same he destroys everything in sight ! His sister got a wooden kitchen for Christmas that she loves and he has pulled one of the doors off the hinges. He broke countless toys and has even shaken the metal safety gate so hard it snapped xx

  19. My son is only one so I can't say for sure whether we have a destroyer on our hands, but my sister sure does. Her son is 4 and has always been so rough on toys. It's not that he means to ruin everything, but his play always seems to include fighting, running, jumping and throwing toys. He doesn't seem to listen, either. It sounds like your little one loves taking cars apart. Perhaps he will become a mechanic or another trade? Then these moments will be something you all can laugh about in the future. #justanotherlinky

  20. Oh dear :( I don't have any experience with children but remember my friend saying that when my godsons were younger they would wind each other up since they're only 18 months apart and got into all sorts of scrapes! x

  21. Aw but he's so cute with it haha. My two are also both destroyers. I have books which are genuinely more sticky tape than paper! I keep trying to convince myself that it's a phase... just another 15 or so years to go... ;0)

  22. I used to be the same. I wanted to know how things work and am clumsy. I grew out of it once I figured out it kept getting me into trouble. Hopefully he'll be the same

  23. My son is abit like that, he's like Godzilla stomping around and breaking things sometimes! #justanotherlinky

  24. My son is more of a destroyer than the girls were, but I think too that he likes to see how things are made and how they go together. Anyway that's what I tell myself lol

  25. This sounds so familiar. I still catch them sometimes taking things apart to see how they work ... and that's just my husband! #justanotherlinky

  26. It may well be a sign he is incredibly bright. I used to find my youngest so challenging and now he is registered as gifted so I reckon he always wanted to learn and understand and perhaps I did not stimulate him enough. Label him in your own thoughts but I would not do it out loud or it could become a self-fulfilling propehcy

  27. Aww bless! Mine aren't too bad so far, though little one definitely has a bit more of a destructive streak than the eldest, but she's more of a throw things than break them type (though one day throwing something WILL break it!)I think most kids grow out of it. As you say, it is probably just connected to trying to find out about the toy most of the time! #justanotherlinky

  28. Oh don't worry - he will end up being a famous inventor having learnt how everything works - we need boys like Noah to build the world! #justanotherlinky

  29. Bless him, perhaps it is the name as we have a Noah who chews everything, his toy cars had spoilers and now they are chewed. He also had a wooden tool kit and that has been near enough eaten. xx

  30. When my kids were younger, there were a few kids this always seemed to happen to - they still all have inquiring minds now, so maybe they are the explorers and inventors of the future :)

  32. Your son sounds like my nephew... actually they all sound like a typical little boy. But come to think of it, my daughter went through this stage too. So guess it's just kids being kids ;) But as parents, that can be a bit annoying when they do it to new toys, especially if they are a bit on the expensive side, isn't it? That's what life with kids and being a parent is all about I guess. Sigh. #BloggersUKClub Dean of Little Steps

  33. Yes! Sounds like my 2.5 yr old! He goes out of his way to pull things apart, smash things on the ground from a great height and break EVERYTHING! "I wanna see how it work Mumma!". Hmmm...

  34. I agree with you he is certainly not doing it on purpose. I suppose it is all about action and consequence (if I do this what will happen?) and that shows he is an extremely bright little boy. #bestandworst

  39. Monkey went through a phase where he was the same, although touch wood we seem to getting over it. He still likes taking things apart to see how they work though (thankfully just at ours) and he's obsessed with the programme 'how its made'!! Thanks for hosting #Justanotherlinky xx

  40. In fairness to Noah, those fireman sam & the like doors come off when you look at them. I'm forever reattaching doors & my kids are quite gentle with their toys. I think boys go through phases of being rough when they play but it's not purposeful like throwing things around - it's just how they play. They are busy busy! Thanks so much for sharing with #bloggerclubuk
